As we approach “mental health awareness,” let’s remain vigilant about preventing mental health from fading into the background. While navigating the new, albeit temporary, “normal” of the “21st Century,” mental health has increasingly dominated conversations.

Ayurveda provides specialized, tailored treatments that effectively alleviate stress and various mental and physiological disorders. One such successful option is Ayurvedic Shirodhara Treatment, and this post will elucidate and illustrate the benefits it offers.

In Sanskrit, “Shiro” translates to “head,” while “Dhara” signifies “flow.” Undoubtedly, Shirodhara stands as the most widely recognized treatment within the modern world’s Ayurvedic holistic health system.

This therapeutic procedure involves a gentle stream of warmed Ayurvedic oils, personalized for one’s body type and constitution, poured from a specific height above the forehead’s apex, in an uninterrupted flow, for a predetermined duration. The oil initially graces the forehead before cascading onto the scalp and hair, subsequently recirculating through the bespoke Shirodhara system.

The modern tendency to spend excessive time engaged with electronics and social media brings heightened mental activity. Unfortunately, the lack of adequate time and energy devoted to recovery, tranquility, and nurturing our thoughts can negatively impact our cognitive processes and coping abilities. Shirodhara functions as a nurturing treatment for our thoughts…

Staying aligned with the holistic concept, the mind, and body are intrinsically interconnected, relying on each other. Envision your body as a tree and your mind as its roots. Just as a tree can only thrive and grow when its roots are nurtured, watered, and fed, your body’s operation and growth depend on a well-functioning and nourished mind. Watering the leaves will bear little fruit if the roots are neglected.

For those acquainted with Ayurveda, the three doshas constituting our individual makeup are Vata (Space/Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth/Water). Each dosha presents its distinctive concerns:

  • Symptoms of Vata include anxiety, sleeplessness, hyperactivity, restlessness, and neurological issues.
  • Pitta manifests in stress, hypertension, hormonal imbalances, sleep disturbances, hair loss, premature greying, and headaches.
  • Kapha-related symptoms encompass depression, sinus problems, lethargy, and memory lapses.

Today’s predominant source of illness can be traced back to a single origin: stress. Shirodhara therapy targets the root of stress and tension. Let’s delve into “how”…

Through the precise pouring of specially selected oil directly onto the forehead, the resultant liquid stream exerts a profound influence on the neurological system. As a result, the mind starts to quiet down.

Therapeutic herbal oils evoke sensations of calmness and relaxation, soothing the mind and enhancing blood circulation precisely where needed. Many individuals attain a state of bliss and transition into a profound and restful slumber. It’s important to note that sleep is not recommended during the therapy session.

Your motivation for seeking Ayurvedic Shirodhara therapy may span a range of possibilities. Depending on your circumstances, it might entail a one-time experience or a sequence of comprehensive Shirodhara sessions, with successive sessions further fostering mental “stillness.”

If you’re grappling with a persistent issue, we might recommend a series of therapies in conjunction with Shirodhara. The benefits of Shirodhara therapy are noteworthy:

  1. Reduced Anxiety: The rhythmic, soothing flow of medicated oil onto the ajna chakra soothes the limbic system, reducing stress hormones like cortisol and alleviating symptoms of anxiety disorders.
  2. Enhanced Mental Clarity: The warm oil streaming across the forehead stimulates the prefrontal cortex, enhancing focus, dispelling negative thought patterns, and fostering mindful awareness and presence.
  3. Improved Sleep Quality: Gentle pressure and the oil’s movement along the forehead and scalp activate the vagus nerve, triggering the parasympathetic system for more profound, restorative sleep.
  4. Stress Alleviation: The continuous oil flow onto the forehead induces a meditative state, lowering blood pressure and heart rate to counteract the effects of chronic stress on the body.
  5. Diminished Restlessness: The oil’s path along the central nervous system pacifies hyperactivity and calms thoughts, addressing restlessness, distraction, and other ADHD symptoms.
  6. Augmented Concentration: Precise marma point therapy enhances blood circulation in the brain, nourishing neural networks and amplifying concentration, cognitive function, and single-pointed awareness.
  7. Heightened Memory: The oil’s course across vital marma points stimulates the hippocampus, strengthening connections for improved encoding, storage, and retrieval of both short and long-term memories.
  8. Addressing ADHD: The soothing oil flow along the prefrontal cortex enhances dopamine signaling, crucial for managing ADHD symptoms like inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
  9. Headaches & Migraines: The oil’s drizzle on marma points diminishes pitta dosha, relieving pressure, tension, and pain associated with headaches, migraines, and neuralgia.
  10. Balancing Hormonal Levels: The synchronized oil pour on marma points restores equilibrium between the right and justify hemispheres, regulating hormonal secretions from the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.
  11. Resolving Hair-related Concerns: Nutrient-rich oils deeply penetrate the scalp, stimulating hair follicles and circulation at the roots, thwarting hair fall, premature greying, thinning, and balding.

The Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is a 5.5-year degree program provided by SGT University in Gurugram, India. BAMS merges contemporary medical science with traditional Ayurvedic curative techniques.

Within the BAMS program, students receive comprehensive training in proper Shirodhara methodology and the art of selecting suitable oils tailored to specific doshas and conditions. For addressing vata issues, like anxiety, sesame oil is a common choice, while cooling oils like coconut are employed for fiery pitta imbalances.

Through Shirodhara and other therapies, the BAMS program imparts holistic training in the ancient practice of Ayurvedic healing. Graduates emerge as proficient Ayurvedic physicians, equipped not solely with medical knowledge, but with a profound comprehension that authentic healing necessitates a comprehensive approach. Therapies such as Shirodhara exemplify this holistic perspective by soothing the mind and physiology through meditative effects.

As we progress in our pursuit of health solutions for the challenges of contemporary existence, it’s prudent to turn to time-tested systems like Shirodhara within Ayurveda. By merging age-old practices with contemporary medical science, we can devise well-balanced, sustainable strategies for treating illness and promoting the overall well-being of the body, mind, and spirit.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medicinal practice with roots attributed to be more than 4000 years old. The origin of Ayurveda is attributed to Lord Dhanvantari, the physician of Gods according to Hindu scriptures.

Ayurvedic healing relies on the balance/harmony between the mind, body, and spirit. The ancients believed that the origins of Ayurveda were from the gods themselves, who transmitted the knowledge to the sages, who then gave it to human physicians.

The important Ayurveda texts (the main classical canon) are composed of the following texts:

  • Charaka Samhita
  • Susruta Samhita
  • Ashtanga Hridya

According to Ayurveda, the human body is made up of the elements of earth, water, air, and ether and has three main energy channels, i.e. Tridosha (Kapha, Pitta, and Vatta).

It is the balance between the three doshas that bring about health and harmony within the body and keep diseases at bay.

The Main Objectives of Ayurveda

The main objectives of Ayurveda can be divided into two categories:

  • Swasthasya Swathya Rakshanam: This can be translated as preventive medicine. These include the steps, therapies, exercises, and medicines that need to be taken by a patient to ensure that they live a healthy life, free from disease.
  • Aturasya Vikar Prashamanam – This includes the therapeutic part of the practice. These include the steps taken to cure an illness or a disease when it has already taken place.

Career Options after BAMS

The rise in awareness about the importance of alternative medicine and traditional medicinal practices, partially due to the rising cost of orthodox medicine, has led to a boom in career opportunities available to graduates in BAMS.

Immunity in Ayurveda can be understood under multiple topics. Among them the most important is Bala or the concept of strength, Vyadhi Kshamatva or the concept of supreme resilience. The concept of Bala explains the ability of the system to repair and nourish itself and be effective in diseases prevention whereas Vyadhi kshamatva is the ability of the immune system to fight against the diseases causing pathogens.

Ayurveda focuses on following plans for acquiring Bala or enhancing immunity:

Proper and suitable Ahara, performing exercise with proper method, using different beneficial Rasayana yogas.

Balavardhaka bhava (factors which increases strength\immunity) as described by Acharya Charak are-

  • Birth in a place where people are naturally healthy or strong, birth in family of strong person (means without any family history of immune deficient disorders),
  • Birth at the time when people naturally gain strength (Visarga Kala), favorable time, excellence among qualities of Bija (sperm and ovum)
  • Kshetra (uterus)
  • Excellence of diet (Ahara Sampat)
  • Excellence of physique (Shareera Sampat)
  • Excellence of suitability (Satmya Sampat)
  • All mental faculties are proper (Sattva Sampat)
  • Natural mechanism (Sabhavsiddha)
  • Young age
  • Exercises

In Ayurveda Oja is considered as vital in the defense mechanism of the body. It resides in the heart but also circulates all over the body and maintains health status of the person.

If this is lost, life is also lost, where as if this is intact, life also continues and sustained.

According to the concept of Ojas or Bala or Vyadhikshamatva, the body’s resistance is of tremendous importance in the daily welfare of living beings not only for diseases prevention but also for rapid recovery after diseases affliction.

After all the ability to withstand change can only be developed by maintaining a state of equilibrium in the body, mind and soul. So, one should always work for enhancing the immunity.
