Panchakarma Workshop

Faculty of Indian Medical System, SGT University is entering into an MoU for Student and Faculty exchange programme with Ayurveda College, Coimbatore which has been run by RVS Educational Trust. As a part of the student exchange programme, 15 students of 4rth year B.A.M.S, Faculty of Indian Medical System are undergoing 10 days hands-on practice in Pachakarma at Ayurveda College, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu from 26.03.2019 to 6.04.2019 accompanied by Dr.B.Kothainayagi, Assistant Professor, FIMS.
Students Started by train on 24.03.2019 and reached Coimbatore on 26.03.2019
Day 1: Students were given an introduction on all the procedures that had to be done on 26.03.2019 along with the case discussion. The Various Procedures on which the students were trained are Kashaya Vasti, Matra Vasti, Abhyanga, Nasya Karna Poorana, Varma Therapy and lekhana karma for Vartma Sharkara (Conjunctival Concretions)
Day 2: The day started with a class inside the kashaya room on “How to prepare vasti dravya “, Patra Potali and Shastika Shali Pinda. It was followed by a lecture on “ Panchakarma Procedures and the practical utility of Swedana Karma”. Later students had their chance for hands-on training on Shashtika Lepa and vasti on patients. In the evening they had a great opportunity to meet and interact with a Dynamic Personality, Padmashree Dr. P.R.Krishnakumar, Managing Director of Arya Vaidya Pharmacy. The day ended with a visit to Dhanwantari Temple.
Day 3: The day 3 started with Parayanam of Ashtanga hridya followed by meditation. Then they were taken to a kashaya room for preparation of Vasti dravya and shashlik shali pinda. Thereafter, they were given an opportunity to do Kati vasti, Abhyanga, shashtikshali pind sweda, Matra and kashayavasti like therapies to the patients. In the noon, a lecture by the Medical director of Ayurveda college, Coimbatore by Dr. P.T. Chacko was given on “understanding of keraliya panchakarma”.In the Afternoon a special astrologer was sent by Shri. P.R. Krishna Kumar Ji (Managing Director of AVP foundation) to get the students’ horoscope checked.
Day 4: Students were taken to Arya Vaidya Chikitsalaya for a visit to know how OPDs, IPDs and documentation are done. It was followed by a presentation on how do digital documentation and the different portals were introduced to the students to motivate their learning towards Ayurveda and for research. In the Afternoon session, students were taken to another campus in Mangarai where AVP provides special training to the students along with pharmacological management. A special demonstration was arranged on Shiro abhyanga, Mukha abhyanga, Shiro Dhara, and pizhichil.
Day 5: The students first prepared medicines for panchakarma procedures in the kashaya room followed by a lecture on “Basics of diagnosis and treatment” and “Diagnosis through the signs visible on the tongue, nail and body for various pathological conditions” by Dr. P.R. Krishna Prasad; Ayurvedic Practitioner.
Day 6: Students were first taken to Kartikeya temple, Mardamalai; followed by going to The Isha Foundation where students took blessings of Lord Shiva and meditated in Dhyaan Linga.
Day 7: Before sunrise, students travelled to Kunoor to a resort named “Ayurveda and Yoga Retreat Resort, Wellington, Kunoor, Ooty”. They got the opportunity to learn from Dr. Chandramauli and took the students for the campus visit. Then they were taken to the highest peak of Eastern ghat of Nilgiri; Doddabetta. Then there was a visit to a Tea and Chocolate Factory followed by sightseeing in the Wax Museum, Ooty. Students then enjoyed boating in Ooty. Then, the beauty of Botanical Garden made students refreshed in the evening.
Day 8: Students had been shown how to collect to snuhi Ksheera for Kshara Sutra Preparation followed by Preparation of Kshara Sutra. In the afternoon, they were explained about musculo skeletal disorders and their management through Varma Therapy
Day 9: Students were taken to Vaidyagram, run by Punarnava Trust at Ettimadai, Coimbatore were they have made the entire construction as per the shastra. It is made with the Vision of serving the society through Ayurveda through various Sections like Balagram, Vridha Gram, Nivritti Gram. Then they were taken to Arya Vaidya Chikitsalayam at Navakarai and taken through the complete campus for rounds where students were briefed about the various sections.
Day 10: There was an introduction class on Panchakarma by Dr.Chandra Mouli, in which students were briefed about the procedures followed by a live demonstration on Cupping (a form of Alabu), Pracchanna and Sadhyo Vamana.
Day 11: Started with the visit to Kangikode, AVP factory where students visited the factory and learned about the collection of drugs, its preparation, and packaging. It included different types of Kalpana like Arishta, Kashaya, Taila, Choorna, Bhasma, Gutika, etc. Thereafter they were taken to CIMH, an herbal garden where endangered species were shown to them. Students got a chance to learn about different ways of conserving the medicinal plants and growing them. The plants in the garden were organized in various forms of Dashpushpa, Dwadasha rashi, sacred groves, fruit garden, Dashamoola, Trigandha, etc.
Students Started by train from Coimbatore on 06.04.2019 and reached in the evening 08.04.2019.
